Yayasan Bali Taksu Indonesia will be holding a series of film education workshops and for the first workshop, US film maker Les Guthman will be working with the students on how films are produced creatively and production wise (25 Nov - 5 Dec). Les will conduct the workshop with his recent Mekong-Angkor film, "Churning the Sea of Time" (Link) will be included in our Bali Taksu Film Festival (www.balifilmfest.com). The film was featured at the Museum of Modern Art's "Documentary Fortnight" film festival last March, the Washington DC Environmental Film Festival, among others; and has been shown at the Smithsonian and the Royal Geographic Society in London. |

The creative part of the youth film education workshop will be held with Jean Pierre Dutilleux, an award winning Belgian film maker and founder of the Amazonas Film Festival in Brazil, www.jpdutilleux.com . He will mentor the students in developing story ideas and create 'storyboards' for their short films. We will also screen his documentary films during the Bali festival. We are also fortunate to have well known and award winning Indonesian film makers Christine Hakim and Garin Nugroho contributing to our program and film festival. The student's Short Films produced will be presented and awarded during the Bali Taksu Film Festival & Awards (29 Nov - 4 Dec). The concept is intended to empower young individuals thereby enabling them to produce films that have a positive impact on the local community. A two week-long mentorship program is created whereby local pre-selected students from throughout Indonesia work alongside established Indonesian and international actors, producers, directors and writers to produce short documentaries. The purpose of this project is to generate a deeper understanding of the Indonesian heritage. Contributing to the preservation of cultural roots through the power of film and storytelling. At the same time this event will give Bali Taksu Film Festival & Awards greater global exposure and recognition for their efforts and programs. We are committed to these projects and the benefits they will bring to Indonesia’s youth. |

| Les Guthman 'I can't say enough about the value of the filmmakers' seminar. I loved working with the students and was impressed by their professionalism and dedication to making the best films they could under the pressure of time and limited resources. The editing process went as well as I hoped it would go and I was pleased with the results. The seminar was well structured and the films addressed vital environmental issues on Bali - that alone was enormously valuable.' |

CREATIVE WRITING FOR FILM WORKSHOP ***** One-Day Workshop Inspires Future Film-makers Showing How Films Develop From a Simple, But Engaging, Story |
|
Bali Taksu Film Festival & Awards (BTFF&A) today announced the launch of an innovative workshop called Creative Writing for Film to be held in Bali on 30 September 2007 at Balai Banjar, Ubud. In partnership with the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, billed as one of the top literary events in the Asian region (25-30 September 2007), Creative Writing for Film will educate middle and high school students about the art and process of writing for film. Conducted by Salman Aristo, the one-day inter-active program gives students a chance to work alongside an award-winning Indonesian Scriptwriter and Producer to create story ideas. Aristo has been recognized for his work in Film for (Catatan Akhir Sekolah, Brownies, Aries, Foto Kotak dan Jendela, and Alexandria) and Television (P, Matahariku, Fairish, Alia & Pramandhana, Asha Tidak Mati and Tiga Mantan Satu Tunangan). Winner of the Hubert Bal’s Foundation Feature Length Script Competition for Swimmer and Daughter (2006), Aristo says, “There is a great deal of gratification when working with students. Hopefully, I can increase their awareness of how films are created and encourage a new generation of Indonesian scriptwriters.” The children’s work created during the program will be awarded for merit and continue on as part of the inaugural Bali Taksu Film Festival & Awards (25 October – 4 November 2007). “Education is an important part of the Film Festival. In addition to the ‘Creative Writing for Film’, there are plans for a ‘Young Indonesian Independent Filmmakers Circle’ with the aim of bringing young Indonesia filmmakers of today to the world’s cinemas,” said BTFF&A director Deborah Gabinetti. |
