Asian Art Museum, SF, CA USA will screen ‘The Beginning of Travel to Bali’ on 23 July as part of its extensive program Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance. THE DREAM BOAT (Polyphon Films, Germany) is currently filming two episodes in Bali of the highly popular, family-orientated, prime-time TV series. Airing for over 20 years and broadcast in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the show is produced for the Second German Television Network, ZDF. BFC provides the necessary production support.

BFC is proud to support the Asian Pacific Film Festival, LA (USA) with a special screening of Indonesia’s award winning RED AND WHITE (aka ‘Merah Putih’) at the Directors Guild of America on 30 April. Produced by Margate House, the war movie is set in 1947 and depicts the struggle for independence through the lives of three young cadets.

MARCH
IMAX Animal Orphans 3D has started filming in Kalimantan. An epic amount of effort ensured that the largest camera package ever assembled for an IMAX film cleared Bali customs in the fastest time possible arriving in Pangkalan Bun without a hitch. The month-long shoot includes locations at OFI Care Center, Camp Leakey, Hanau and Pangkalan Bun.
 
JANUARY
BFC has been engaged to facilitate Warner Bros IMAX wildlife documentary feature ANIMAL ORPHANS 3D. Filming will feature the fine work being done with the orphaned orangutans of Kalimantan’s Tanjung Puting National Park. Directed by David Lickley, production commences in March. This is the second IMAX film BFC has worked on with Howard Hall’s UNDER THE SEA 3D released in 2009.

Its a Wrap! 'Eat, Pray, Love' completes four weeks of principle photography on Bali. The film starring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem and a crew lead by director Ryan Murphy shot for a total four months in four different countries to bring Elizabeth Gilbert's book to life. BFC was instrumental in providing the necessary support, says Executive Producer Stan Wlodkowski. Link

BALINALE International Film Festival’s first event of 2009 was held on 1 April with a special screening of the 2008 multi-award winning documentary "FLOW - for the love of water" presented by its producer STEVEN STARR. 
 
MARCH
Swiss National Television is producing a seven-part travel series entitled‚ Simply Luxury. One of the episodes will feature the presenter taking viewers on a special tour of Borobudur Temple in Java. BFC is coordinating the shoot and securing the necessary permits to film at the UNESCO heritage site.

 
 
FEBRUARY
View the Indonesia filming expedition in the latest IMAX 3D Warner Bros film UNDER THE SEA 3D, narrated by Jim Carrey and Directed by Howard Hall (DEEP SEA 3D and INTO THE DEEP 3D) LINK  and click on Webisode #5. 'Ultimate Gap Year' Studio Lambert (UK). Accompanied by BFC’s expert fixers, two teams of 6 travellers trekked over nine weeks across 12 locations in Indonesia from Java to Sumba in a competition with each other to determine who is the best travelling companion. The series is set to be broadcast on Channel 4 Television.

Filmmakers Michelle and Howard Hall are in Komodo National Park filming their latest Warner Bros IMAX feature ‘UNDER THE SEA 3D’.  The filmmakers will be guest speakers during the BALINALE International Film Festival held on Bali 21-31 October.     Link

Stories to be featured are the Bissu of Sulawesi, commonly termed "gender transcendent" or as "having a ritual role" these people have extreme powers of healing and sought out for their spiritual awareness. The program showcases the top spas in Asia and will be broadcasted in the United States and then distributed to Europe and other parts of the world. Endorsed by the Bali Tourism Board, the Bali episode featured spas at the COMO SHAMBALA and KOMANEKA TANGGAYUDA.

 

JULY:

Icon Films (UK) are filming two episodes of Nick Baker’s Weird Creatures on the island of Sulawesi. Working with Jungle Run Productions and BFC, the subjects they plan to shoot are the mimic octopus and the spectral tarsier living in the Lembeh Straits and Tankoko National Park.

Preparations are underway with Whitewolf Entertainment (USA) to produce a documentary series on unknown animals for The History Channel. Tentatively called "Science Meets Legends", the episode examines the Ape Man of Sumatra (Orang Pendek). Many local witnesses as well as several prominent western conservationists have seen this creature, referred to as a small big-foot.

 

April:

Announcing the first ever BALI TAKSU FILM FESTIVAL & AWARDS saluting those filmmakers and celebrities who continue to support the island and its people. Held 1st - 4th November 2007 the event includes a retrospective of Bali-themed Films, a Tribute to Indonesian Filmmakers and a Christies Charity Art Auction. In addition to the festivities, the producers and directors will have an opportunity to explore the abundant film location possibilities available throughout the country.

 

BFC attends AFCI Film Locations Trade Show at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium 12-15 April (Santa, Monica, CA). During Locations, the Asian Film Commissions Network will hold its Board of Directors Meeting in which BFC is sitting co-Vice President.

Tri-Film Productions (USA) are in Bali to film a Microsoft charity program about a local community of farmers, “Kelompok Tani Muda Mandiri,” from Pancasari (Bedugul) who sell their crop of paprika through the Internet. This project is one of 13 other projects based in countries all over the world.

BEYOND PRODUCTIONS (Australia)
are in pre-production for a National Geographic Program entitled TABOO, which explores different customs and cultural practices around the world showing what some might consider taboo, is a celebrated part of culture for others. The crew will be working with BFC filming the sulfur miners at Ljen Crater (East Java) and the Pasola Festival (Sumba).

BFC is presently Location Scouting for an upcoming OPTNZ (Our Production Team in New Zealand) shoot. Specializing is Stills Production; OPTNZ has enlisted the experienced professionals of BFC to assist the crew from planning to production of their next major campaign on Bali.

SEPTEMBER:

MTV ‘Living Lahaina’
BFC is working together with PT Balindotirta Sejahtera (Jungle Run Productions) on an exciting new MTV program called ‘Living Lahaina’ to be aired in the United States and Internationally. ‘Living Lahaina’ follow a group of young adventurers as they take on the awesome surf of Mentawai Straits (Sumatra) and Bali, as well as, experience the local culture and traditions.
 

'GREAT OCEAN ADVENTURES' is being produced by RDF MEDIA for CHANNEL 5 (UK) and ANIMAL PLANET/DISCOVERY. The adventure series follows British diver and marine biologist MONTY HALL, on an expedition to eight of the most spectacular dive locations in the world, in which Indonesia has several of them. In Bali, Monty films the island’s most famous marine animal, the MOLA-MOLA or giant ocean sunfish.

 

Blood Simple Productions (NL) completed a one day film shoot on the beautiful rice fields of Jati Luwih in western Bali. Recreating an elaborate set of a traditional Indonesian ‘pasar’ (market), the commercial will air later this year for the Dutch foods company Conimex.  

 

 

AUGUST:

AD IDEM PRODUCTIONS PTE LTD (Singapore) are shooting on Bali a 25-minute documentary titled ‘Mountain Journeys’. Trekking from the sacred mother temple of Pura Besakih to the summit of Mount Agung (3.142 kilometres high), the show will feature the breathtaking panoramic views of Bali as the team encounter the local culture & lifestyle of the people living and working on the site of this active volcano.

produces an Indonesia Travelogue for Royal Brunei Airline. Highlighting the best the country has to offer, Stellar Inflight features locations and activities from Surabaya, Bali and Jakarta.

 

 

JULY:
‘Project Manokwari’
will bring the viewer to the remote and mysterious undersea world in Dore Bay, off the coast of Manokwari, West Papua. Major sequences will document the diving and exploration of the marine life there concentrating on the natural environment by showing the arresting beauty of the coral reefs and undersea life in the region.

Showcasing this exotic locale, as well as giving the audience a sense of life on a live aboard dive boat, the film will incorporate aerial and land based photography of the region to create a memorable portrait of this intriguingly distant location.

 

A busy month with BFC providing support for the following diverse projects: Great Outdoors Travelogue (Network 7 - Australia) showcasing Bali destinations and resorts, National Geographic’s Seconds from Disaster (Darlow Smithson Productions - UK) investigating the Bali Bombing of 2002, filming on Sumba island was the realty show Route 44 (Fremantle Entertainment – Finland) and Ticket to the Tribe (Eyeworks TV - Germany and Holland) explored the people and culture of Sumatra island.

FEBRUARY :

BFC is proud to announce the completion of the historical important documentary ‘The Effects of Balinese Dance on the West - A Tourist Trail’ co-produced with South East Film & Video Archive (SEFVA) University of Brighton, UK, the rare 1939 16mm Kodachrome color footage shot by Swedish diplomat T.H. Wistrand documents the great cultural importance of Balinese dance heritage and provides a unique glimpse into the true Bali that existed at the time.
