Screen Adaptaion of ‘Almayer’s Folly’

LeBrocquy Fraser Productions Ltd (2004 Golden Globe Winners for Osama) and the Malaysian Film Director U-Wei Bin Haji Saari are collaborating to bring to the big screen Joseph Conrad’s first novel Almayer’s Folly. Releasing the film internationally in Europe, North and South America, as well as within South East Asia and Australasia, the producers we are currently in discussion with international film distributors.

Almayer’s Folly has adventure, drama, romance, conflicts, suspense and a sense of period. Demonstrating the conflict between, and within, the different cultures in 1850’s Borneo ” Dutch Colonial, Chinese, Malay, Dayak and Arab ” the story gives us a window into the Malay society in Borneo in the late 19 th century.

Almayer’s Folly combines the skills and experience of U-Wei Bin Haji Saari (Kaki Bakar aka The Arsonist ” un Certain Regard Cannes 1995, Jogho aka The Champion ” Pusan International Film Festival 1998) with key international production members including; Production Designer – Desmond Crowe (UK) (Band of Brothers HBO) and Director of Photography – Alain Choquart (France) (Boesman and Lena directed by John Barry, and Captain Conan directed by Bertrand Tavernier).

Securing the Award-winning American actor Harvey Keitel(The Piano, Pulp Fiction, Red Dragon) to play the lead role of ALMAYER. (Mr. Keitel is also one of the film’s producers) and to ensure that the film stays true to the story, the producers will by using strong theatrical and seasonal film talent to play key supporting roles from Malaysia (Eman Manan, Khalled Salleh) and Indonesia (Christine Hakim, El Manik).

Working with the assistance of the Bali Film Commission, the producers are looking to cast for one of the most important roles in the film in Jakarta and Bali. The role of NINA – Harvey Keitel’s and Christine Hakim’s daughter.

The producers will also take this opportunity to review potential filming locations in Indonesia for this and future productions.
